MOTORIST OVERTAKES POLICE SERGEANT AT INTERSECTION

Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Wanganui, yesterday, alter Eric Raymond Hunter had admitted a charge ot driving a motorcar in a manner which under the circumstances might have been dangerous to the public. Senior-Sergeant F. Culloty said that on March 31 Sergeant M. E. Parker was cycling along Somme Parade in the direction of the Dublin Street Bridge when he saw a car approaching at a speed of about 30 miles an hour and behind it another car travelling at a faster rate. When at the junction of Mathieson Street the second car pulled wide in order to pass the other vehicle and had to swing sharply back to the left in order to avoid Sergeant Parker and possibly other cyclists. Had traffic been coming out of Mathieson Street the position could have been serious. In a statement to the police defendant said his usual speed in the city area was 25 to 30 miles an hour and he did not think he had exceeded 11 on this occasion. He was always careful, when passing cyclists. Replying to the magistrale, defendant said that lie drove laoO miles a month and had never had an accident. The magistrate said that motorists must not overtake others at junctions or intersections.
