RETIRING HEADMASTER ENTERTAINED

<Q C ) Hunterville, May 3. Mr. G. Snadden who has been headmaster of the Hunterville Consolidated School for several years past and who is retiring next week, was guest of honour with Mrs. Snadden at a social evening held in St. Andrew’s Hall this week. The function was organised by the school committee, ex-members of the committee, teachers and ex-teachers. During the evening Rev. A. W. Baxter (chairman of the committee) presented Mr. Snadden with an occasional table and in doing so referred to the happy relations existing between the headmaster and the committee. Through Mr. Snadden's wise guidance, he said, a happy atmosphere was obtained in the school and the district would be the poorer by his departure. These remarks were endorsed by Mr. D- D. Simpson (ex-chairman) who said that the high tone and fine scholastic record of the Hunterville school was due to Mr. Snadden’s example and leadership. Both speakers wished Mr. and Mrs. Snadden every happiness in their well earned retirement. In returning thanks Mr. Snadden said that he had always been proud to be associated with a comnlittee which took such a live interest in the school and the high standing of the school was due to the enthusiasm and ready co-operation of the staff. Earlier in the evening Mrs. Snadden and her daughter (Mrs. Edwards) were presented with sprays. A public farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Snadden will be given at the fancy dress ball on Thursday evening. FING PONG CLUB. At a well attended meeting last evening it was decided to reform the Hunterville Ping Pong Club which had been recess for several years. Mr. L. J. Thompson, the former president, was in the chair and he was elected president. Other officials appointed were: secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. Duncan; club captain, Mr. T. Adkins; vice-captain, Mr. C. P. McNab; committee, Mrs Robinson, Miss Lound and Mr. P. Sutton The subscription was fixed at 5s and it was decided to meet in the Scots Hall every Monday night at 7 p.m., starting from May 5. Indications point to the club having a very successful season as it will have the support of several experienced players. intending purchasers are required to bring their, coupons. “GOLD DIGGERS REVIEW.” The box plan for the “Gold Diggers Review” to be held in the Civic Theatre to-morrow nigiit by the Marton Sports Committee is tilling fast at Mogridge’s. Those who intend patronising this spectacular show are well advised to make their reservations early to avoid disappointment, as this is a show not to be missed. It will be an,entertainment suitable for the whole family—something for everyone. A varied programme has been arranged and features local artists in songs, duets, choruses, yodelling, humorous sketches (which are sure to raise a good laugh) and several dance routines. Part of the chorus songs will be rendered by pupils from tlie Convent School and everyone knows that these pupils can be relied upon for lirst class numbers. The whole show will be compered by Mr. John Brown of 2ZA. A very successful dress rehearsal was hela in the theatre on Sunday. FURNITURE SALE Mr J. Particulars of the sale appeared in yesterday's issue. FLAG 500 The Marton Croquet Club held another very successful flag 500 evening recently. Those at the winning table were Messrs. S. Whale, Alan Stantiall, Tout and Gregory. Runners-up were Messrs. C. Hamer, Gow, C. Henderson and Arthur Stantiall. Competitions were won by Messrs. Brown and Gaston. HAVVKESTONE LADIES’ GOLF CLUB The follownig is the draw for an L. medal round to be played today at 1.15 p.m.:—Mrs. Ball v. Mrs. McLean, Mrs Gracie v. Mrs Fogelberg, Mrs. Franke v. Mrs. Kendrick, Mrs. Hempieman v. Mrs. Baxter. Mrs. Taylor v. Mrs. North, Mrs. Stantiall v. Mrs. Andrews. JUNIOR NATIONAL PARTY A general meeting of the Marton Junior National Party held last week was addressed by Mr. E. B. K. Gordon, M. and Mr. J. Caithness, chairman of the Rangitikei electorate. Mr. Gordon gave an interesting and instructive talk on what the National Party stood for, and Mr. Caithness explained group organisation and the function of divisional headquarters In Wellington. A delicious supper was served by the ladies' committee. CHILDREN’S FANCY DRESS PARTY The Sports Queen committee gave the children of Marton a very enjoyable time last Saturday night in the Parish Hall, when a large number of children, young and old, rolled up for a fancy dress party. Games and dances and items by the children were featured on the programme and a merry time was spent by all. An excellent supper was dispensed. COMING EVENTS. Euchre evening in Sports Hall in aid of Town Queen. Wednesday. May 7: “Gold Diggers Review," a spectacular musical show in Civic Theatre presented by the Sports Queen committee. Rangitikei Hunt meeting at “Flockhart,” Cliff Road, Marton General meeting of all committees of Country Queen in Coronation Hall. Thursday, May 8: Annual general meeting of Rangitikei Hockey Umpires’ Association in Marton Jockey Club room. Games evening in Tutaenv: Hall, organised by Country Queen committee. Friday, May 9: Street produce sale in Broadway, in aid of Country Queen funds. Saturday, May 10: Monster carnival dance in Victory Hall in support of Town Queen.
