Webb Jones, Gonville, has returned from a visit to WellingtonMrs. A. Chenery, New Plymouth, visited Wanganui at the week-end and was the guest of Mrs. C. W. Baker, Gonville. 21ST BIRTHDAY PARTY.

Native ferns and shrubs made an attractive decoration to the Pyramid Hall recently, the occasion being a party given by Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Burtton in honour of their daughter’s (Lorraine) coming of age. Some 70 guests were present, and were received by the guest of honour, who wore a dainty frock of primrose organdi trimmed with black velvet and .gold sequins- Assisting her daughter was Mrs. Burtton, wearing an attractive frock of brilliant studded black ripple crepe, with which was worn a flame spray. The first general meeting for the year of the Christ Church branch of the Mothers’ Union was held on 6 The church service was conducted by the vicar. Rev. J. R. L. Higgs, who took as sublet for his address: “The Responsibilities and Special Opportunities of the Mothers’ Union in Face of World Needs.” Door hostesses in the Parish Hall were Mesdames Connett and Dreyer- After afternoon tea the vicar presided over the annual meeting. Mrs. Lambert was re-elected Enrolling Member and Mrs. C. R. White and Mrs. Clare were added to the committee to replace Mrs. Weekes and Mrs- Kendall who retired in rotation. Mrs. Lambert presented her I annual report which covered a very full year of activity for the branch. I Members were informed that it had been decided by the committee to postpone the Lady Dav Festival in the hope that the Bishop and Mrs. Owen might be able to be present, but a service of Holy Communion would be held on Lady Day.

Queen Mary, now in her 80th year, is spending a large part of her time out and about, visiting shops, parks, displays and theatres. Within one recent month she visited seven exhibitions, attended the gala premieres of two films, saw Vivien Leigh in “The Skin of Our Teeth,” visited “The Kingmaker.” and went to two suburban cinemas.

Instead of celebrating their twelfth birthday anniversary on March 6 with a party, the Johnson quadruplets, of Timaru—Vera, Kathleen, Mary, and Bruce —packed a parcel of soap and foodstuffs for their paternal grandmother in Kent, England. The parcel will be sent away as soon as possible. Of average height for 12 years, Kathleen, Mary, and Bruce are doing well at school in standard VI. They are all musical- Kathleen, Mary and Bruce sing in the Timaru South School’s choir and in the Bank Street Methodist Church choir, and they have travelled to other towns to sing with choirs. Mary’s particular fancy is elocution, which she is studying, while Bruce and Kathleen are learning to play the piano.
