NZ- CYCLING CHAMPS.

WEST COAST RIDER WINS 500 METRES UNPAGED TITLE (P.A.) Auckland, March, 9. F. T. Tredrea and E. L. G. Hughes of Auckland and the junior L. P. Locke of Canterbury, were easily the outstanding performers in th c lields of fine quality when the New Zealand amateur cycling championships were held on Saturday at the ■ Western Springs Stadium be£or e about 6000 spectators. Each of the three performed magnificently Tredrea won the gruelling 10 mile senior paced championship by mor e than three laps in setting a New Zealand record tor the event. Hughes, by riding second to Tredrea nt the race broke, a string of five successive victories in national championship cycling events in the last two months, and Locke, by winning the junior half mile unpaced and the junior five miles paced championships amply demonstrated that he is th e greatest New Zealand amateur cycling has seen in many years. D. Yea’ics of Palmerston North, who rode for thc West Coast, North Island Centre, caused an upset by defeating thc titleholder, A. W. Stonex, in the 500 metres unpaged championship in unusual circumstances.

To decide the titleholder, three match races between the two were proposed. In the first Stonex was forced to withdraw just after the two had entered uyon th c last furlong—the only tin ed portion of the race—when Yeates cut across in front and accidentally tore about a dozen spokes from Stonex's front wheel. Both men stopped riding and shook hands, but a little later, when Yeates rode across th e finishing line, Stonex entered a protest against Y’eates’ win on the ground that Yeates had cut across too sharply, but the protest was disallowed. In thc second heat, Stonex's tactics were faulty when he let Yeates get about a length in front. Approaching the furlong lor the sprint, as Stonex accelerated, Yeates also made a jump, and in a very fast finish the Aucklander was narrowly beaten. In the following results the abbreviations used are as follows: —WC West Coast; C, Canterbury; W, Wellington; A, Auckland.
