“KESTREL"

AUTUMN RACE MEETINGS

TRENTHAM, TARANAKI AND TE RAPA

Most important of the mid-autumn race meetings is that staged at Trentham hy the Wellington Racing Club, commencing to-day. The Taranaki Jockey Club, which will also race to-day al New Plymouth, will have the advantage of concluding its meeting on Monday, the provincial Anniversary Day holiday. At Te Rapa the Waikato fixture will be held, and there will also be racing at Westport and Cromwell, the latter fixture having commenced’yesterday. Main events at Trentham are the Autumn Handicap, the Thompson Handicap, and the N.Z. St. Leger Stakes, and at New Plymouth the Taranaki Cup will be contested.

AT NEW PLYMOUTH TARANAKI EiELDS AND PROSPECTS Excellent fields are carded to-day for the opening day of the Taranaki Club's autumn meeting, which will oe concluded on' Monday, the Anniversary Day holiday In the Taranaki province. In spite of the clash with Trentham and Te Rapa, the club has received generous response from owners and trainers, though a s could be expected the main strength comes from Taranaki stables. The field for the Taranaki Cup is a particularly pleasing one, with several recent winners engaged, and th£ issue appears open. In the other open race, the Flying Handicap, there are some smart sprinters, with recent form on the circuit likely to provide an excellent guide. The hack fields have filled well and there should be good racing throughout. Th e track is reported to be very firm, with little prospect of rain to ease the going. Horses likely to be in favour may include:— Waitara Hurdles. Peter’s Choice, Rockanui, Pollticay Boy. Ngamotu Juvenile. • Golden Beau, Night School, Great Trek. Moturoa Electric.—Slieve Bloom, Afton Water, Yusuf. County Welter—Stony Broke, Yandra, Craven. Taranaki Cup, Blanket, Bramble Song, Flying Gold. Flying Handicap.—Theocritus, Furioso. Tideless. Okato Hat, Handicap.—Silver Wedding, Nancy Boswells, Francis Mond. Timaru Hack Handicap. Morning Dew, My Way, Playtos. Following are the acceptors:— 11.2 WAITARA HURDWIS

TRENTHAM CARD THOMPSON HANDICAP DAY PROSPECTS The Thompson Handicap, ranking a s one of the Dominion's great mile races and rivalling the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie and the Winter Cup at Riccarton in importance, may be regarded as the main event at the autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, opening to-day at Trentham. Still, the Inclusion of the Autumn Handicap, with a stake of £3OOO as against £2OOO for the Thompson, tends to focus greater attention on the tweve-furlong race. Further, there are such events as the Railway Handicap and the New Zealand St. Leger to engage attention, adding to the attractions of the opening day. Now that Bruce is regarded as a certain starter in the Autumn Handicap he is fairly sure to dispute favouritism with Broiefield, whose win at Masterton last Saturday added to the good impression made when he beat all but Bruce in the Wellington Cup. Arco, who will be bracketed with Broiefield, and Langue d'Or are, like Broiefield, trained at Awapuni by C. J. Thomson, and that mentor thus holds a strong hand. Royal Victor runs good races at Trentham, and Carnforth and Flying Ace must be respected, but the danger to those higher up may come from the New Zealand Oaks winner Sakuntala. With Howe likely to run in the St. Leger Opulent, a consistent performer at the summer meeting at Trentham, will be a wel'-fancied candidate . the Thompson Handicap. There will also be strong support for Red Pickle. Merry Robin, Gay Stroller, Brown Derby, Voltaic and Sage King. The Nizami filly Indian Dawn, a doub inner at the January meeting at T. itim, is likely to touch a short price . ■ the St. Leger, with Desert Fox a possible danger and Howe fairly certain to get in the money. If Da Vinci gets beaten in the Railway Handicap patrons may expect to see Lord Thelo, Peter Gazelle, and Specialist providing tire danger to the topweight. The track is certain to be firm, it not hard, and the weather outlook is very' promising. Last year's totallsator turnover of £lB5, 129 10/-, is likely to be improved on, an the following may be fancied:—

Rimu Highweight.—Foxada, Master, Raymond, Lambro. Plunket Nursery. Lady Christine, Kartlkeya, Tara Hall. N.Z. St. Leger Stakes. —Indian Dawn,

Desert Fox, Howe. Autumn Handicap—Broiefield, Bruce,

FIELDS AT TE RAPA WAIKATO PROSPECTS REVIEWED (Special) Auckland, March 7. Fields for the Waikato Racing Club's meeting at Te Rapa to-morrow are of the usual generous proportions associated with provincial fixtures up this way. Divisions will be required in the Huntly Hack Handicap, the opening event, and in some other instances there will be more starters than can be comfortably accommodated. Thus a good deal may depend on luck in the running, though the Te Rapa track is a roomy one. The going promises to be hard and fast. The Vercoe Memorial is a £lOOO mile race, so it is not surprising to find it attracting some 20 acceptors. Foxwyn Is a possibility if he can hold his place to the home turn. Still, he may have some difficulty in keeping up with brilliant milers like Iwo Jima, Broiedame, Hippodrome and Miss Julienne, not to mention some of the lesser lights. For the Railway Handicap, the open sprint, there is what may be termed a comparatively small field for the Auckland province. Black Beret, Contango, Bonny Pay and Landveyor may be in the hunt- If Tavernside Is reserved for this instead of the Verco: Memorial he will be bracketed wit)Contango. Horses favoured for their Te Rap.engagements Include:— Huntlv Maiden.—First Division: Mis? Hiria, Silk Thread (coupled with Pilaro). Second Division: Jollar (coupled with Kathshara).
