(P.A.) Whangarei, March 7 While drawing the war veteran’s pension allowance, Thomas Cook 1 worked as green-keeper for the Whangarei Golf Club. From 1943 to 1946, Cook had drawn wages totalling £983 and a pension amounting to £839. At the Magistrate’s Court, this morning, Cook was charged with making false declarations in 1943, 1944, 1945, and 1946 Io mislead the department by making a nil declaration of annual income. Two months’ imprisonment was imposed. The secretary of the War Pen-; sions Board asked that Cook be ordered to refund £839.

Defendant’s plea was that he was afraid to divulge his wages lest he (should lose the pension for he was subject to brohehial asthma which might compel him to suddenly relinquish green-keeping, which he had undertaken when the shortage of labour was acute.
