FOALS OF BERNBOROUGH IN AUSTRALIA

CHAMPION MAY HAVE LEFT PROGENY Sydney, March 6. Rumours which started during the week-end that Bernborough has more than one foal in Queensland have been taken up by the Sydney press with varying degrees of caution. The original report claimed that Jack Bach, of Dalby, Queensland, stated that Bernborough had four foals in Australia. Bach, who bought Bernborough as a foal with his dam, Bern Maid, for 140 guineas, was quoted as saying that he had a two-year-old colt by Bernborough from Miss Shirley, and that there were three other foals, the wherabouts of two of which he mentioned.

The first paper to publish the storyquoted Bach as saying that the foals were conceived when Bernborough was taken from “the other fellow’s stable and kept for ten days.” This afternoon’s “Sydney Sun stated: “Rumours have been current on the Darling Downs for some time that not only are there foals by Bernborough in Australia but at least one has raced. Toowoomba racing men express no surprise at the story. No move to register any horse by Bernborough has been made as far as the Queensland Turf Club is aware.” The “Daily Telegraph” published a telephone conversation with Bach in which he said his two-year-old colt was the only Bernborough colt he knew of in Australia. He described the colt, which was born in August, 1945, as a big horse bearing a remarkable resemblance to Bernborough himself. Bach stated this week that he would apply to the Queensland Turf Club for registration and the name “Mr. Bernie.” He admitted not having made a return of the foaling to the Ausli alian,-Stud Book as, when in Sydney after Bernborough had been barred from racing in 1943, he had been told that returns by him to the Stud Book would not be accepted. The keeper of the Stud Book, Mr. A. Loddon Yuille, was quoted by the “Herald” as saying that until the Registrar of Racehorses was satisfied over the particulars of breeding no horses claimed to be the stock of Bernborough would be allowed to race in Australia.
