GENERAL NEWS

High Barometer. Barometric pressure was high in Wanganui yesterday, the reading being 30.36 in. at 2 p.m. The barometer was then steady after a slight drop over the previous 12 hours. The weather yesterday was perfect, with brilliant sunshine throughout the day, warm temperatures and no wind. Many visitors are in Wanganui for the New Zealand pipe bands’ contest, and they were able to see the city at its best.

Cement Due To-day. With a full load of cement the Anchor Company's coastal motor-ship Nikau is expected at Wanganui today. She loaded at Tarakohe yesterday and will most likely arrive at the Town Whatf on this morning’s tide. The vessel is bringing 170 tons and will discharge on Monday. It will be the Nikau’s first visit to Wanganui for some weeks, but in the interim other ships have arrived at Wanganui with cement. No “Raw Milk” Labels.

Wanganui Milk Corporation announced yesterday that bottled raw milk distributed to the city’s consumers will carry "Pure Milk” labels until further notice because there is a shortage of “Raw Milk” labels. Caps ran out on Thursday and yesterday morning it was stated that the tops marked “Pure” would be substituted until fresh supplies of the correctly printed caps are received from Auckland.

Search for Accommodation. With band contests, girl’s marching, and other activities, it has been hard to guarantee accommodation in Wanganui this season. There is no doubt that the city has been a busy one, and Wanganui can claim to be the foremost centre this year of Dominion significance. The managers of a visiting theatrical company have found it so. The International Celebrity Vaudeville Company from Australia, have found it so difficult to obtain accommodation here that they have made an appeal to private citizens to accommodate the members of the company, some 60 odd, in private homes as paying guests. They will be here during the first week in AprilCitizens are being invited to help the company in its predicament. Pipe Band Contest Finance. “That competing bands In cities where contests are held run them with an equal shar e in the organisation and profit,” was a remit considered at a special conference of the New Zealand Highland Pipe Band Association, but after considerable discussion an amendment that the matter be deferred was carried. Some doubt existed among delegates as to whether the 1948 contest, to be held at Dunedin, was for the Dunedin Pipe Band, or for the centre, although on the minutes it was stated that the contest was for thg cen tre. It was pointed out that some bands, such as the Wanganui Collegiate School, would be prepared to assist with the staging of a contest, but could not accept any responsibility. Similar views were expressed by the delegate for the St. Andrew’s College Band.
