LATE MR. DAVID STRACHAN’S FUNERAL

The laie Mr. David Strachan, of vVan■•A’TUi, was laid to rest in the Aramoho Cemetery yesterday. In the cortege were several members of the South African Veterans’ Association, with whom Mr. Strachan served as a member of the Third. Contingent, which left Wanganui in 1901. The casket was draped with the Union Jack and his hat and uniform, and on top was the bugle on which he sounded '.he calls those men answered in those far off days. A service was held at Christ Church, conducted by the vicar, the Rev. J. R. .uggs. Mr. Higgs said that most men were known for what they were and what they did. It could be said of the lat e Mr. Strachan, that he was noted both for what he did and what he was. Mr. Higgs, being a newcomer to Wanganui, perhaps did not know what ie did. but. he had ample proof what he was. He was a man of action, and had served his country in its unie of need, and was a Communicant, which was the greatest achievement of all. Pall-bearers were Messrs R. G. Tal•>oys, R. Christie, C. Aitken, A. J. Pritchard, S. Hanton and W. Meikle. Members of the Wanganui Returned Services Association, which embraces the South African Veterans, tiled past the grav e and each placed in it a poppy of remembrance. The U.S.A, tribute was read by Mr. W. Young. The late Mr. Strachan leaves a widow and one son, Mr Gordon Strachan, of Wanganui.
