BETTING ON TOTE AND OFF THE COURSE

Quoting figures to support the Dominion Sportsmen's Association claim that off-course betting is substantially in excess of that invested on the totalisator, Mr. W. E. Leicester, leading counsel for the Association, submitted an interesting table to the Gaming Commission to-day. The fiures showed the actual amount held by 165 members of th.- Association on November 23, November 30 and December 7, J 94 6, on which days the CJ.C* spring meeting was held.. Further, the calculated amount held by 173 members who had not furnished returns were included, and the totalisator returns for the same dates were shown in comparison.

The amounts quoted by Mr. Leicester as being held by bookmakers for the three days of the C.J.C. meeting were respectively £273,151, £218,515 and £219,643, and the totalisator turnovers for the corresponding days at Riccarton were £172,000, £139,502 and £132,683. In the aggregate wagers with bookmakers for those three days, with the aggregate totalisator turnover in parentheses, were calculated as follow: Nov. 23: £392,664 (£329,639). Nov- 30: £350,969 (£316,992). Dec. 7: £360,274 (£310,862).
