SOIL CONSERVATION COUNCIL TO STUDY RIVER SCHEME

PROBLEMS LN RANGITIKEI A major scheme for controlling the meander channel of the Rangitikei River from Rewa to the sea, a distance of about 35 miles, is to be placed before settlers with property on the banks of the river, but a meeting, which was to have been held early next month has been postponed till a later dale. The question was again discussed by the Rangitikei Catchment Board at its monthly meeting on Thursday, when the chairman, Mr. K. A. Williams (Marton), reported the whole scheme, as outlined at the January meeting, had been forwarded to the Rivers Control and Soil Conservation Council. He had since learned that the council had called for a report from one of its technical officers, who would inspect the river between March 11 and 18. Originally, the Catchment Board had decided to arrange for a meeting of settlers interested to be held in Bulls early in March, but the chairman held that this meeting should not be held till the council’s views on the project were forthcoming. "We cannot very well have a meeting of settlers till we know how the council views this matter,” he said. The board had previously decided to apply to the Rivers Control and Soil Conservation Council for a subsidy. “It would be a mistake to call people together before we have the desired information to pass on,” said Mr. A. P. Howard (Marton). The chairman: It. is understood, of course, that as soon as we know, where we arc we she?? have that meeting. The hoard to the meeting being postponed. Envisaged in the scheme is a major plan for planting trees along (he banks of t he river.
