MARTON & DISTRICT NEWS

“CHRONICLE" OFFICE: JOCKEY CLUB ROOMS, BROADWAY. AGENT znd MANAGER ARTHUR WAY. CORRESPONDENT RUSSELL PARKINSON. Telephones: Office 2301 (Marion). Private. 2514. Correspondent: 2S6C. 11 1 " . |

TOWN AND COUNTRY PREPARE FOR MARTON QUEEN CARNIVAL

“In most instances farmers have made some attempt to comply with the notices sent, but very few had cleared the weeds concerned in the time stipulated in the notice,” Mr. Robinson added. Though no large areas of blackberry were in evidence in the northern portion of the county, odd plants were found scattered in most districts. They were confined mainly to road frontages and no doubt the seeds had been carried by birds. Referring to variegated thistles in the southern portion of the county, Mr. Robinson stated that though much work had been done this season toward eradicating the weed large areas had now gone to seed. “It seems that no definite steps are being taken under the present system to eradicate this weed, particularly on the larger holdings where it is impossible to clear all the thistles in the spring and summer with the staff available,” Mr. Robinson added. “As a result considerable areas are allowed to seed each year.”

Supported of both the Town and Country Queens, made preparations for their respective campaigns in the forthcoming Marton Queen Carnival, at meetings held in Marton on Wednesday night. While a week ago there was a certain amount o£ apathy displayed by the public, there is evidence that the residents ot the town are now taking a far greater interest than hitherto and when the eight weeks' carnival begins on March 22 there should be plenty of enthusiasm and support forthcoming. While the attendance convened by Mr. K, McK. Duncan to make arrangements for receiving nominations for the Country Queen was small, it was enthusiastic, but it is hoped that, the next meeting, to elect the queen, on Thursday, March 13, will be strongly supported by the country residents.

Mr. E. V. Calkin, president of the Marton Sports Society, addressed the meeting on similar lines to that at the Town and Sports Queen meetings, outlining the aims and objects of the carnival.

Mr. J. Caithness was appointed chairman of the Country Queen, and Mr. S. Laurensen, secretary.

It was decided to carve the country district into four—Bonny Glen-South Makirikiri, Fern Flats-Tutaenui, Por-ewa-Rata, Onepuhi-Greatford. A queen is to be nominated from each district and the nomination must be in the hands of the secretary, M. Laurensen, by Tuesday, March 11. A public meeting will be held in the Sports Hall on Thursday, March 13, for the purpose of electing the Country Queen. TOWN MEETING WELL ATTENDED.

While there was plenty of enthusiasm at -the meeting called to elect the Sports Queen earlier in the'week, it was surpassed by those interested in furthering the interests of the Town Queen who gathered in the Sports Hall on Wednesday night. The attendance was the largest of the campaign yet—nearly 100. The election of Miss June Pickford to represent the town was greeted with applause. The two unsuccessful candidates, Miss Mary Shannon and Miss Pat Brown, were appointed princesses.

Because there were a few “foreigners” in the hall the plan of activity to be adopted during the eight weeks' campaign, was not divulged, other than to elect a general committee. When the meeting had dispersed, the ladies' and mens’ committees met behind closed doors and preliminary plans for the staging of several novelty stunts arranged. The general committee elected was: —Messrs. A. J. Petrie, H. J. Higham, R. A. Poppelwell, G. H. Denbow, A. b. Blackledge, J. Wales, G. C. Thomas G Pickford, P. Bending, V. Cobham, F. C. Christensen, W. Frampton, C. Twist, E. Cobham, C. Saywell The ladies’ committee wi'l comprise Mesdames E. V. Calkin, G. Hogan R Williams, J. Wales, W. J. Mogridge, R A. Poppelwell, G. C. Thomas, G Pickford, A. Brown, A. Todd, A. Kelly, K. H. Fowler, E. C. Fogelberg, OSha’ugnessy, Misses B. Kimpton, L. Hopkins. M. Kelly, S. Duncan. The colours of blue and white were adopted for the Town Queen. It was explained by the secretary of the Combined Sports Society, Mr. R. G. Kingdon, that each sixpence would count as a vote during the carnival. PREPARATIONS FOR RUGBY SEASON. Football clubs in the district are now preparing for the Rugby season, which opens in Rangitikei usually the last Saturday in April. AMBULANCE TO CONDUCT DRIVE FOR MORE MEMBERS.

For the purpose of interesting young men and women in the work or the st. John Ambulance and recruiting more members, a window display is being staged by the Marton Brigade in one of the local shops next week, depicting the various activities of the Order in Marton.

At the annual meeting of the Marton St... John Ambulance Brigade this week, Mr T. E. Barton, vice-president, who acted as chairman in the absence of the president, Mr. A. Way, sincerely hoped that more members would join the organisation and the drive would be successful. He referred to the bcnelils that were to be derived if young men would learn something Of first aid and hoped that the window display would encourage a large membership and give the public some idea of what the local division wa s accomplishing. Mr. Barton also congratulated the division on its very successful year. During the year, all divisions had attended parades at the Methodist, Anglican and Presbyterian Churches, said the superintendent of the division, Mr. D. L. Penn, in presentiny the sixteenth annual report. With the cessation of hostilities the brigade was pleased to welcome back from overseas service, Mr. W. Price.

The Dominion was honoured by a visit from Lady Louis Mountbatten during 1946 and members of the Nursing Division travelled to Wanganui to meet Lady Louis. Owing to rain the annual picnic was not held out-of-doors, but wa s transferred to Headquarters, whicn satisfactorily fulfilled the Brigade’s object. After many years of absence, the division was represented at the district competitions in Wanganui, and the Marton team was successful in bringing back, for the first time, the Crawford Cup. “The call on members for public duty has been extremely heavy," said Mr. Penn. “This was due tc the extra grounds covered during the football season and with our i comparatively small membership, I feel proud to control a division with such a fine record. No less than over 100 cases of first aid were treated. With this record in mind I look forward to an improvement in membership so that the call on so few members may be eased," said Mr. Penn.

The. superintendent concluded by thanking all organisation who had given such ready assistance during the year. Awards to the Marton Division during the year included a 12-year service medal to Ambulance Officer R. H. Turnbull, liwj-year service certificates to Superintendent R. L. Penn, Sgt. W. A. Sanders, Messrs R. Lewis, J. M. Duncan. R. G. Witney, L. W. Worsop, L. Davies, W. E. McEwen, E. O. Jones N. Miles, W. J. Webb, W. A. Price and S. A. Cobham. These members were still awaiting their medallions or labels and service chevrons. Officers elected were: Patron, His Worship the Mayor. Mr. F. Purnell; president, Mr. A. Way; vice-presidents Messrs T. E. Barton, T. McElwaine, W. B. Langston, L. Barry, G. B. Gregory, A. H Marshall, F. H. Dexter, A. Howard and Rev. N. Williams; divisional superintendent, Mr. R. L. Penn; ambulance officer, Mr. R. H. Turnbull; treasurer, Mr. W. Montgomery; members in charge of stores and equipment. Mr. W. Sanders; member in charge of duties, Mr. L. Worsop; divisional secretary, Mr R. H. Turnbull; executive committee, superintendent, secretary, treasurer and Messrs Sanders, Cobham, Worsop, W. Price and O. Nolan.

The contemplated disposal of the ambulance trailer was discussed and negotiations outlined by the secretary, Mr. Turnbull. It was explained that as tlie trailer was not now used, it was no longer an asset and was costing the brigade money. On the suggestion of Mr. Penn, it was agreed that the ambulance division committee meet the nursing division with a view to a satifactciy disposal of the trailer. Big fields were again the ordei of the evening when the Marton Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club staged the last of a series of five meetings on Tuesday night for the Galpin and Archibald Cups. Although the events lacked some of the exciting finishes of previous meetings, the standard of athletics was still high, and in the cycling event:- the entry of visiting Wanganui cy?lsts helped to make competition keener.
