EUPHONIUM SOLO WON BY WANGANUI COMPETITOR

A young Wanganui Garrison Band player, R. L. Jackson, won the euphonium solo when competitions associated with the New Zee • .id brass band contests were continued yesterday. He gained 47 points out of a possible of 50 and the adjudicator, Mr. Hugh Niven (Melbourne) described his performance as outstanding. The euphonium solo (own choice) competition was held in the Opera House yesterday morning, 32 entries, representing bandsmen from all parts of the Dominion, being received. Second place went to R. MacDonald (Kaikorai Brass), tVho obtained 46 points. W. A. Cooper, with 43 points, was third, and W. Hickman (Palmerston North Garrison) was fourth with 42 points.

Next on the list was D. McDougall (Timaru Municipal) with points for fifth place. G. N. Muschamp (St. Kilda Municipal), J. L. Eyres (Wanganui Garrison) and N. Anderson (Palmerston North City Silver-, each with 40 points, tied for sixth place. Two other competitors, J. S. McClure (Band of the Ist Battalion, Southland Regiment) and T. A. Miller (Ashburton Silver), each v/ith 39 points, tied for seventh place. Generaly speaking this was not. a strong section and the adjudicator commented that with many competitors there was too much vibrato and much over-blowing. Some competitors had selected solos which were too difficult to play and above thenability. The performance of the winner, however, was outstanding.
