FORTY THOUSAND FOOD PARCELS FOR BRITAIN HELD IN AUCKLAND

Auckland, Feb. 24. Over 44,000 food parcels addressed to Britain have accumulated in the Auckland Post Office during a hold-up in parcel despatch which has dedeveloped in the last month. It is the longest delay for at. least some year? before the war and occurred, accord. Ing to the deputy-Chief Postmaster, Mr. W. G. Morgan, because no suitable ship has sailed for the United Kingdom fop more than a month. However, the hold-up is expected to end this week. Postage on civilian food gift parcels for Britain cannot be reduced to the war-time concession rates which applied on pa reais to servicemen overseas, because the conditions which enabled cheap rates do not apply overseas. Servicemen’s parcels were han. died by troops using military motor transport, and often were despatched in troopships without cost to the post office. This i< one of several aspects of the question explained by. the Postmaster-General, Mr. Hackett, in reply to a query from Auckland.
