WANGANUI TO VOTE ON PROPOSAL TO RUN TROLLEY BUSES
A proposed scheme for the replacement of the present tramway system in Wanganui by trolley and petrol buses, by the Wanganui City Council, and the proposed Transport Passenger Loan of £130,000, which represents the estimated cost of the change-over, will be voted upon by the ratepayers of Wanganui next month. For. some time now the Wanganui City Council has been considering the switch from the present transport system operating in the city, and yesterday official notice of the proposed loan was issued, The loan is estimated to cover all expenses incorporated in the transport change, which includes material needed, appliances and labour required in the removal ot the present tram rails. Security offered for the loan will be a special rate of 1.625 d in the pound on the rateable value on the unimproved value of all the rateable property in the City of Wanganui. The loan will be for a period of up to 18 years, and shall be repaid by equal aggregate annuel or half-year-ly instalments. As stipulated by the “Local Loans Board Act,” an average increase of 25 per cent, shall be made in all fares in and about the city in respect to the new system. The poll is to be held on March 26, when 13 polling booths will be operated between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.
