12,000 PEOPLE AT FIRST DAY BAND SESSIONS
About 12,000 people attended the first-day sessions of the New Zealand brass bands’ championships, which opened yesterday. For the hymn test in the afternoon there were well over 7000 people present, including bandsmen, and for the evening concert the attendance exceeded 4000. Overcast conditions about 2 o'clock threatened rain, but the weather cleared and the attendance was greater than had been expected and augurs well for the popularity of the contest.
