EFFORT TO OVERCOME SHORTAGE OF SHEARERS

A hold-up in shearing operations due to the number of shearers available being inadequate to meet the demand has caused concern to Federated Farmers and efforts are to be made to overcome tlie shortage.

The provincial meat and wool section ot Federated Farmers will meet, at Wanganui on Wednesday at 2 p.m. to discuss with officers of tlie National Service Department plans for an improvement in the number of shearers to be made available in future shearing seasons. This shortage was not confined just to the Wanganui district, but was the case right through the Dominion. It seems probable that tlie cause ot the shortage of experienced shearers is due to the fact that the inflow ot new recruits over recent years has been negligible. The National Service Department is seeking reliable information as to the overall position as a prerequisite to tlie formulation of a scheme for ensuring an adequate supply of new recruits and a comprehensive survey is to he made immediately.
