SURPRISES AT HAWERA

FLYING GOLD AND FURIOSO Despite carrying 101 bs overweight, Flying Gold won in great style the Egmont Cup, the principal race on the opening day of the Egmont Racing Chubs’ summer meeting on Saturday. P urioso paid better than a quarter of a century when he outpaced the field in the Flying Handicap, the main sprint.

The Wanganui horseman, K. Chote, piloted two winners and the longpriced Fort Royal, who finished third ■n the Cup. At the Cup presentation ceremony Mr. W. A. Sheaf, M.P., congratulates the owners, trainer and rider of Flying Gold. The w'ife of the president, Mrs. W. O. Williams, made the presentation.

The weather was fine and a good crowd was present. The totalisatoi handled £46,945, as compared with £44,926 for the first day last year. Flying Gold was not prominent in the early stages but moved up going out of the back and challenged tne pacemakers over the last furlong. He finished just too strongly for Loyal Bian, on whom W. J. Broughton had ridden a perfect race He had Loyal Bian in a handy position on the rails all the way and did not cover any unnecessary ground. Fort Royal made a game bid to repeat his win of last year but just failed to see the distance out. Dark Morning ran a useful race and Blanket and Young Trent both finished solidly. Clyde Bridge made the early pace but finished well back. EASY FOR FLIRTATIOUS

The Highweignt Handicap proved easy for Flirtatious. She lay in about fifth place most of the way, but moving up approaching the straight strode [to the front at the distance to win comfortably. Slavonik finished too well for Tahli. Par Avion was a good fourth, followed by Restriction, Balintore and Political Boy. FURIOSO SURPRISES Putting in a great run around the field after being slow to move, Furioso mowed down his opponents ovet the final furlong of the Flying Handicap to pay over a third of a century on the win machine. Besides Furicso ; Mallow and S f ony Broke were slow to move. Racing to- the home turn, the early leader. Theocritus, ran a little wide, Molly Martia and Prince Revel coming -through on the inside. Just as this trio and Drambuie were fighting it out, Furioso swept up to head Molly Martia, who stayed on too well for Theocritus. Drambuie was fourth and then came Colopier, Peter Theio and Mallow. LORD LEO ALL THE WAY W. J. Broughton jumped Lord Leo cut from the rails position and led all the way in the Trial Handicap. Goody Two Shoes went with him for five furlongs, where the pair were showing the way to Mareton Bay, Plato Boy and Saleve Bloom. Goody Two Shoes soon cried enough, but Saleve Bloom then issued a strong challenge. In a hard finish Lord Leo just held his rival off. Goody Two Shoes was third, with Sivam, who had been slow to move, finishing fast m fourth place. Moreton Bay, Just Barney and Tide Area followed. EXEMPLARY SHOWS HOW After Early Astir and Robinette, who made the pace, ran wide at the straight entrance, Exemplary came through smoothly to win the Juvenile Handicap. Despite running wide. Early Astir finished on well and was only just beaten. White Cliff finishc:’ strongly for third. Sparkling Scholar was right up fourth with Robinette and Air Power dos? up ONE FOR CARMELITA After being handy all the way Carmelita finished strongly on the rails to win the Takaora Hack Handicap in a goed finish. Morning Dew appeared a shade unlucky because he seemed to meet with trouble about a furlong from the post. Light Opera finished solidlv for third, while Aggravation came from a long way back for fourth. El Tiger did not begin with his usual speed, but was running on at the finish. Morning Dew and Mersine led out of the back and into the straight from Gav Joy, Carr lita and Repudiate. Carmelita slipped through on the rails to beat Morning Dew, with Light Opera finishing well in third place.

MY WAY TAKES TRIAL My Way finished too strongly for her opponents in the Whareroa Trial Handicap. He soon ran into a handy position and was about third into the straight. Platarnon had to be hard ridden from an outside barrier position to secure a position early, and this did not leave him with much in reserve when challenged in the straight. Platarnon was clear at the distance but My Way finished well to beat him, with Aurora’s Song third. Then came Beau Reve, Minion, Bian Rouge, Fine Flavour and Hormond. Queen Plato led over the last, three furlongs of the Waipapa Hack Handicap and held off a stiff challenge from Manpower in the straight. Hunting Park, who was well placed at the home turn, held on for third from Silver Wedding, who ran a good race. Standee’s saddle slipped and Francis Mond met with interference when going well five furlongs from home. Though Manpower finished gamely he could not reach Queen Plato. Hunting Park was third, and then came Silver Wedding. Night Charm, Francis Mond and Standee. Details: — HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP. (Of £300: IJ miles.) 2/I— Flirtatious, 9.3. A.
