NEED TO RETAIN HIGH MEAT EXPORT GRADES

"I can't stress too much the need for us to retain the high grading of our meats," declared the chairman ot the New Zealand Meat Board. Mr. H. G. Grigg, in an address to Wanganui farmers yesterday. "I was surprised at the number ot people in the trade in England who thanked us for maintaining the quality we did,” he said. Butchers in England have had to take any meat that comes their way, and they were pleased to get New Zealand meat because they knew it was good. “Our brand Is on all our meat, and during the war more butchers and householders In England took our meat and appreciated it, and will continue to want it.” Mr. Grigg read a letter received from butchers in England saying that some of the meat they received during the war was not worth shipping space, and it was pleasing for them to receive the high grade New Zealand meat.

“Although we have had high price* for our lambs, our beef is not held in such high regard," Mr. Grigg continued.

The speaker suggested that a super grade of beef should be established for export, and every effort be made so that New Zealand can compete with the best from other countries. Some irregularities in grading haa led to the appointment of more graders to ensure that the overall quality was maintained.

New Zealand's fat lamb trade had increased to such importance because of its pre-war advertising campaign and for supplying the good article. The time is now ripe to get around and advertise our products In anticipation of the resumption of fuller trade.
