YOUTH FINED ON CHARGE OF ASSAULTING ANOTHER

“It is not usual to find a youth of your age, wearing glasses, committing an assault—you would run a serious risk if the other person retaliated," commented Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, yesterday, after Thomas William Ward had pleaded guilty to assaulting Alfred James Britton. Sergeant W. Tumilty said that defendant, who was aged 17, called at Britton’s home in Campbell Street on December 20 and an argument developed on the footpath. Ward lost his temper and struck Britton a blow on the mouth with his fist. Ward was perfectly frank about the matter and had not been in trouble previously. “No harm appears to have been done to the other person.” said the magistrate, imposing a fine of £l, costs 3s.
