DEATH OF THE WIFE OF PROPRIETOR OF THE TAUMARUNUI PRESS
(0.C.) Raetihi, Jan. 20. A link with the pioneering days of Taumarunui has been broken by the death of Mrs. S. L. Thomas, wife of Mr. W. Thomas, proprietor of the “Taumarunui Press.” Mrs. Thomas was in her 80th year. Born in Dunedin, she was the eldest daughter of Mr. R. Morrison, who later went to live at Geraldine, where he established one of the largest businesses in Canterbury. Mrs. Thomas married in 1883, her husband being managing editor of the “Geraldine Guardian.” Mr and Mrs. Thomas took up residence in Taumarunui in 1908, purchasing the Railway Hotel property. In 1915 Mr. Thomas purchased the “Taumarunui Press.” Mr. and Mrs. Thomas celebrated their golden wedding about three years ago. Mrs. Thomas is survived by her husband and three sons —Messrs. N. Thomas, B. Thomas, and R. W. Thomas.
