SOUTH CANTERBURY WINS FIRST SANDERS CUP RACE

WANGANUI BOAT FILLS TAIL POSITION (P.A.) Auckland, Jan. 20. South Canterbury won thp first race for the Sanders Cup from Otago and North Auckland over a windward and leeward course. The wind was light and variable with occasional freshening gusts during the race. Approaching the last mark before the run home, North Auckland was clearly in the lead but at the mark an advantage of 53 seconds was lost when their spinnaker tangled and the boat became becalmed. South Canterbury and Otago both cleared the mark before North Auckland overcame its difficulties and in the run to the finish South Canterbury maintained its lead without difficulty, crossing first with a margin of 40 seconds. Otago, North Auckland, Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, and Wanganui finished in that order. The three placed boats went ahead at the start and were never headed.
