ELEVEN YEARS AGO AND NOW
Last Saturday the amount invested on the totalisator on the Wellington Cup was £40,857. Just eleven years ago the investments on the eight events on Cup day totaled £40.958—0n1y £6Ol more than was invested on the one race last Saturday. The Wellington Cup of 1936 was >vqn by Queen of Song, whose share of the slake wa r £4?O, inclusive of the value of the trophy. Brown Derby earned £420 last Saturday for winning the Pencarrow Handicap, and Bruce’s owner secured £3250 and a gold cup valued at 100 guineas. To complete the contrast with tile Cup meeting eleven years ago, it may be stated that the stakes offered for the eight races on Cup day of 1936 totalled £2400, as against the £5OOO stake for the 1947 Wellington Cup. Totalisator investments have brought the increase in stakes. The turnover for the three days of the 1936 meeting war. £117,766, as against £440.215 for two days so far at the 1947 meeting.
