BAPTISTS CONDEMN' USE OF PRESS AND RADIO FOR RACING

Regret at the present use of wireless. which fostered the illegal trade of bookmaking bv broadcasting details. was expressed in a resolution passed unanimously by 250 delegate of the Baptist Union of New Zealand. The Assembly wished to call national attention to what it called a “threat to social, economic and moral well-being occasioi ed bv the alarming growth of the gambling habit.” The resolution expressed regret at thp "new prominence given to horses by the Press as directly contributing to the growth of betting.” and hoped that the Gamin" Commission would I grapple adequately with these very jeomnlex and urgent issues. The meeting was the last of the union’s 64th annuel Assembly. Minimum stipends'of ministers and home missionaries were fixed at the same level as the previous year, with a recommendation that a 5 per cent, cost of living bonus be paid wnere no increase had been made during the past two years.
