TOO MANY PEOPLE OF SCIENTIFIC MIND LEAVE NEW ZEALAND
(P.A.) Parliament Bldgs., Oct. 5. More of our scientific personnel were leaving the Dominion than was good for the country, said the Minister in charge of Industrial and Scientific Research, Mr. Sullivan, in the House of Representatives on Saturday afternoon, when the vote for the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research was under consideration. The Minister added that he felt something would have to be done about the matter.
Mr. A. S. Sutherland (Opp., Hauraki) considered that the loss of those officers simply meant they had been attracted away from the country by offers of higher remuneration and better conditions.
Mr. W. J. Polson (Opp., Stratford), discussing the item embracing leather research, said there had been constant I complaints about the inferior sole i leather which was used in boot and [shoe repairs. Mr. Sullivan said a Leather Research Association had been operating in New Zealand for the last TJ years and its work was highly appreciated in the United Kingdom. There had been a tremendous demand for leather during the war. with a result that tanning was not as good as it might be.
