APPARENTLY MR. TRUMAN SUPPORTS PARTITION OF PALESTINE
Recd. 7.35 p.m. New York, Oct. 5. | dined to make public the contents of Mr. Attlee’s’ note to Mr/Truman, but admitted an exchange of “confidential” communications between the President and Mr. Attlee on the Palestine situation. The New York “Herald-Tribune,” in an editorial, questions the propriety of the tone and impatience in Mr. Truman's Palestine statement, and agrees with the British contention that the question of increased Jewish migration to Palestine must be settled against a background of world politics, which President Truman wholly ignored.
President Truman appears bent on avoiding public controversy with Mr. Attlee over the former’s Palestine statement, says the “New York Times” Washington correspondent.
It lias been considered obvious in Washington that Mr. Truman is supporting the partition of Palestine and he has now decided to make that support known. There is no indication of how President Truman intended to retract or modify his statement in the face of immediate sharp reaction from Britain. The White House de-
