OBITUARY
dr. r. h. makgill.
The death occurred at Auckland recently, of Dr. R. H. Makgill, C.8.E., a former executive officer of thepartment of Health. He joined the department in 1901 as district health officer for Auckland. He was at one time Government pathologist. During the absence of the late Dr. Valentine overseas in 1919, he was appointed acting Chief Health Officer and Inspector General of Hospitals. In 1925, he was appointed consultant medical officer to the department. Dr. Makgill served overseas in the R.A.M.C. in the Great War, and on his return to New Zealand in 1916 was appointed by the Minister of Health as a member of a committee to inquire into the health of troops in Trent ham camp. He then took up duties in the Defence Department as assistant director of medical services (sanitation) and in 1919 was awarded the C.B.E.
He retired from the Department of Health in 1938 to live in Auckland.
MR. J. P. WELLS, OF AUCKLAND. The death has occurred in Auckland of Mr. John Fitzpatrick Wells, a well-known educationalist and formerly a Rugby representative of Victoria and Auckland University Colleges, says a Press Association message. He was 56 years old. Mr. Wells was born in Havelock and educated in Canvastown, Hawera District High School, and Victoria and Auckland Universities. He represented each University at Rugby and was in addition Taranaki junior representative and also represented Auckland and sub-unions in the Auckland district. He served overseas with the Ist. Auckland Infantry Brigade in 1915-18 and was teacher at several schools in the Dominion, being since 1931 principal of the Kowhai Intermediate School, Auckland. He was the author of several works on education.
