MATCH WENT TO TWENTY-SECOND HOLE

The feature yesterday of the first round of match play for the Wanganiii Amateur Golf Championship, was the defeat of B. M. Silk (Wanganui), who in the qualifying round on Thursday broke the Belmont course record. After a ne k-and-neck tussle the whole way. G. Roberts, of the Hutt Golf Club, won the match, one up at the 22nd hole.

Other players who. on the completion of the day’s play still reamed thei- postions, were: K. Ilendinning (Manawatu), \V. I'.. Tones (Taumarunui), and A. R. Kitto (Castleeliff). After halving the first hole Silk ifid Roberts entered upon a grim tussle, first one and then the other gaining a lead. On the second green Roberts holed a 15ft. putt for a birdie 3. The third hole »va* squared in a sensational man ner. Roberts’ second left him a foot from the hole, but Silk, with * 15ft. putt, cannoned off Roberts’ ball to halve the hole in 3. The fourth and fifth holes were ial”ed in par figures, and Silk squared on the sixth with a four. The seventh, eighth and ninth ,vere all halved, the seventh with airdie fours, and the other two in aar fours, making both players iquare at the turn, both registerng 35 strokes—two under the rtandard scratch scores for the vav out.

The tenth was halved in four ami on the eleventh. Roberts played a beautiful pitch for his third, winning the hole in a birdie 4. Silk, with a brilliant iron to the green, squared again with a birdie 2, but at the teenth lipped the hole with a 3ft. putt to allow Roberts to go 1 ut>. Again on the next hole. Silk lipped the cup but both players finished with a bogie 3. Roberts bunkered a: the fifteenth and Silk. with a beautiful spoon to the green, won the hole 3-4 to again square. Silk holed a 7ft. putt past a half stymie on the sixteenth and won in 4 to go 1 up. Roberts played a beautiful wood at the seventeenth after a short drive, and Silk also played an excellent iron in his second, the hole being halved in 4. When 1 up, Silk bunkered on the last hole and Roberts‘squared by winning the Hole 4-5.

SQUARE AT THE EIGHTEENTH From the turn both players came home in 37, making a total of 72 each after the eighteenth hole. The first three holes on the commencement of the second time round were halved, the ninteenth in birdie 4, and the other two m five and four, respectively. From the twenty-second tee, both drove well, but Silk duffed his shot and failed to reach

the green while Roberts’ second tell nicely on the green. Both missed long putts—Silk by only a fraction with his fourth —and Roberts went on to win 4-5. Roberts' card showed as follows:
