POLICEMAN GAOLED BECAUSE HE BEAT A NEGRO
Recd. 1 a.m. New York, Oct. 4. A Suwanee County constable, Torn Crews, was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment and fined 1000 dollars on a charge of violating the civil rights of a negro farmhand by beating him until he jumped into the Suwanee River and was drowned. The Federal Court charged Crews with violating the negro’s constitutional right, in that he was denied life and liberty without due process of law.
