CAUSE OF RONGOTAI FIRE BEING INQUIRED INTO
QUITE A FEW THEORIES (P.A.) Wellington, Oct. 4. An inquiry, lasting a week, was concluded by the Air Department today into the Rongotai fire, and a report was handed to the authorities who instigated the investigation. It is undertsood it was directed toward ascertaining the extent to which the Air Force was committed in its responsibility for safeguarding the sections of the building in charge of its personnel, and whether there was any negligence on their part. Insurance adjusters are still making their investigat ons. “We are certainly going to find out all we can,” commented one underwriter. “There are quite a few theories, but any discus’.son at present is purely speculative.” It is understood that it has not yet been possible to arrive at satisfactory conclusions concerning the first point of the outbreak of the fire. Bad weather has hampered salvage operations. The costs of salvage are running into over £3OO a day. There are several weeks of work ahead yet at Rongotai.
