JUVENILE EVENT AT WINGATUI
The McLean Stakes at' Wingatui last Saturday was a triumph for the veteran Riverton trainer, A. McKay, who provided both the winner, Excellency, and the runner-up, Billy Mac. McKay trained the 1943 winner, Lyndall.
Excellency is a chestnut filly by Salmagundi from the Arcitery mare Rodeur, and is a haii-sister to Faithful Pal (by Man's Pal), winner of the Winton Stakes and the Southland Two-Year-Old stakes last season. Like Faithful Pal, Excellency carries the colours of her breeder, Mr. W. T. Oliver, of Riverton.
Billy Mac is a brown gelding by Man’s Pal from Blissful Lady, a Paper Money mare from Lady Blissful, a sister to Bashful Lady. He is owned by Mr. A. C. Mills, of Christchurch.
Velveline, who finished third, is by Theio from the Lackham mare Kehua, a daughter of Arajean, and as the latter was a sister to Arrow Lad. it may be expected that this roan filly will win her share of races for her ownertrainer, who purchased her at. 170 guineas at Trentham last January.
The McLean Stakes was run in one of the heaviest showers on an atrocious day for racing, so the form of some of the unplaced candidates may show substantial improvement a little later in the season. Still, the winner and runner-up might have done just as well under improved conditions, as their performances were impressive.
