TRIBUTES TO COUSENS
WITNESSES FOR DEFENCE
Recd. 9.30 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 3. Warm tribute to the leadership ol Major Charles Hughes Cousens at Bunka prisoner of war camp was paid by an American witness at the central Court to-day. When Cousens was in control at Bunka we had strict discipline aid leadership, and we all worked together as one fighting unit,” said Lieutenant-Commander George Herbert Henshaw, United States Navy. Witness said that when he first arrived at Bunka, the Japanese told him that the Japanese had high hopes of restoring peace through broadcasts of prisoners.
Stuart Thomlinson Simpson, a dentist, stated in evidence, that at Tavoy Camp, Burma, in 1942 Cousens had interviewed the Japanese district comkmander in an attempt to save the Jives of eight prisoners who had been sentenced to death for escaping. The case is proceeding.
