PLAGUE OF LOCUSTS SWEEPS OVER BRAZIL
Recd. 8 p.m. Rio de Janeiro, Oct. 1. A column of locusts 60 miles long and 40 miles wide is advancing on Rio de Janeiro. The horde originated in Argentina in mid-September and crossed the Rio Grande to Brazil, levelling all crops. The Government, without avail, is using all possible means of destruction, including planes spraying poison and fire. The locust cloud is so dense that it darkens the sky and clogs the traffic along the highways. ••••••••••••••••••••••••a*
