WANGANUI CITY'S PROPOSALS UNDER REGIONAL PLANNING
A schedule of major capital works which could be undertaken in Wanganui under regional planning on a six-year basis was submitted by the city engineer, Mr. L. F. Row, earlier in ihe year at the request of the Public Works Department. The list came before the City Council on Tuesday night and was approved. Mr. Row saici that he had been asked early in the year to prepare this list at short notice. The Works Department, in response to a request .ro..i wcn.mgi.on, v/as asKing for details of proposed regional planning works as they affected local bodies. Most of the works subsequently submitted, Mr. Row added, had been discussed by the council at some time or other and there was a possibility v.iat incy wouid be gone on with. Schemes suggested by Mr. Row were:— General maintenance, £50,000 (annually;. City drainage loan and sewerage i:...,. , xoi,uuo (already ap proved by ratepayers. Estimated io oe completed in three years). Street impre. eiticrus, x 60,000 (to be spent in three years). Footpatns, kvroaig and channelling, £36,000 (three-year .scheme’. Duplication of water pipe-line irom Kai rwi to Westmere, £32,000 (twoyear scheme). New transport system for city, £130,000 (to be spread over live years). New town bridge, £75,000. New town hail and municipal offices, £45,000. The total cost of all these scheme* is £440,000, exclusive of the £50,C00 'required annually lor mainll nan*.v purposes. ‘This schedule will not commit the council in any way.” Mr. Row added. • it is only a question of coming m [on regional planning.” So tar as the town bridge was concerned a substantial subsidy was ex ported. At the request of Cr. 11. I*. Amir. ihe council decided to add the construction of a road 5u0....j un..ei me Aramoho Railway Bridge, on I he Ea-» Town side, to the list ol works, provided a subsidy was made available.
