N.Z. WOMEN’S HOCKEY TOURNAMENT

AUCKLAND BEATS RANGITIKEI

(P.A.) Christchurch, Sept. 4. The New Zealand Women's hockey tournament was continued to-day, when the fourth round of matches was played. The weather continued fine and the grounds were in good order. A SECTION Canterbury C 1, Otago B 0; Auckland 1, Rangitikei 0; South Otago had the bye. B SECTION Otago A 9, Buller 0; Wairarapa 1, Ashburton A 0; Eastern Southland had a bye. C SECTION Wellington A 10, Southland 0; Central Otago 2, South Canterbury 1, Canterbury B had a bye. D SECTION Wellington B 7, Ashburton B t). Nelson beat Wanganui by default. Canterbury A had a bye.

RANGITIKEI’S FORM

Brilliant sunshine prevailed for the continuation of the womens hockey tournament in Christchurch, when Rangitikei drew with Canterbury C—two all. This game was played on ground No. 1, a change for the belter, it was thought, but alas, the Rangitikei team seemed more at home on the muddy field on which they played on Saturday. The Rangitikei team was the same as that which beat Otago B.

In the first half, Rangitikei seemed to be a trifle unlucky, having all the better of the spell. After about 25 minutes’ play, from a rebound off the Canterbury goalie’s pads, E. Henderson scored for Rangitikei. After this Canterbuiy attacked more vigorously but good defence by the Rangitikei full-backs, E. Davidson and L. Kukutai. kept the opposing forwards out of the circle. Just on the call of halttime, E. Henderson shot another goal, this being once again the reward for fast following in. The half-time score was Rangitikei 2, Canterbury 0.

Canterbury seemed a new team after the “oranges,” and it was not long before R. Downs opened the scoring for her side, with a hard shot. Five minutes later, S. Toomes (Canterbury) simply dazzled her opponents, and with a beautiful stroke scored Canterbury’s equalising goal. From this stage on, play at times was really fast, but good solid defence was very evident, and no further goals were scored, the game ending in a draw. For Rangitikei, mention might be

made of M. Fowler, at centre, and E. Mills at left-half, both these players playing excellent games-in both attack and’ defence. M. Fowler, in particular used a great variety of strokes,

which was very pleasing to the eye as well as being deceiving to her opponents.
