AUSTRALIA BUYS ALL SURPLUS U.S. PROPERTY IN COUNTRY
Canberra, Sept. 3.
The Australian Government has bought all the surplus American service property in Australia, according to an announcement by the Prime Minister, Mr. Chifley. He said that the purchases oE stocks, mostly in the Brisbane and Townsville areas, had been made at the request of the United States Foreign Liquidation Commission at Manila. The Government had submitted a bid for the United States Air Corps surpluses, excluding flyable aircraft, and also for a variety of other American property in Australia. Under the Lend-Lease settlement agreement the Commonwealth has a right to purchase supplies to the value of £2,032,400. The original listed price of the goods, including aircraft parts, engines, cars, tractors, trucks, armament and radio equipment, is understood to be several times the amount the Government has paid for them. The goods will go to the Australian services and Government departments and surpluses will be sold by the disposal commission.
