BRITISH WHALER BUILT FOR ANTARCTIC PLANES FOR SPOTTING

I Preparations (or the fitting out of ithe British expedition which will take ■ part in Antarctic whaling operations ;are now well forward, and a 32,000ton depot ship, which will serve as a floating base for 12 whaling cruisers, will shortly undertake trials off the Ulster coast.

The ship cost £1,000,000, and was fitted out by a private British whaling firm with the assistance of the Ministry of Food. On the ship will also be based three Walrus amphibian aircraft, which will be used for spotting. They will be flown by a speciallyselected team of Fleet Air Arm pilots, and will be equipped with all the latest devices used for submarine I spotting. The pilots at present are [testing the aircraft and equipment at | a camp near Cowes.
