OBITUARY

LT.COL. D. J. GIBBS. The death has occurred of Lieuten-ant-Colonel David John Gibbs, who commanded the New Zealand Engineers in Samoa and at Gallipoli. He joined the staff of the Wellington Harbour Board as a cadet, at the age of 15, and when he retired in 1938 at the age of 55, was treasurer and assistant. secretary. He was a foundation member of the United Services Club and a member of the Wellesley Club. He had wide interests in sport. MR. J. D. OLDRIDGE. Mr. J. D. Oldridge, who died recently at Paekakariki at the age of 75 years, was born at Le Bons Bay, being a son of the late Mr. T. H. Oldridge, who came from England and settled at Banks Peninsula in 1854. He took up farming on his own account early in life, first at Ashburton and later in the Eketahuna district. Later he became a stock buyer for Abraham and Williams, Ltd. He afterwards managed several stations on the East Coast and North Auckland. He is survived by his widow. MR. R. PARLANE. Prominent in public affairs at Waimauku for nearly half a century, and a justice of the peace for 30 years, Mr. Robert Parlane has died at the age of 80. He was born at Rangiora and settled in the Waimauku Valley, Hokianga, in 1896. Mr. Parlane was a foundation member of the Farmers’ Union and of the Waimauku cheese factory, of which he was also a director. An active member of the Waimauku Methodist Church, he belonged to the Waimauku Valley Lodge of the Independent Order of Oddfellows for 24 years and attained the position of deputy-district grand master and grand lodge representative. Mr. Parlane is survived by five sons and two daughters.
