W.D.F.U. (0.C.) Waitotara, July 19. There was only a small attendance at the June meeting of the W.D.F.U. Mrs. A. Verry presided. As a mark of sympathy to Mrs. J. Verry on the death of her mother, members observed a moment’s silence. Competitions for July: Best bulb and sponge sandwich. During the meeting members were busy knitting peggy squares. A competition. "Well Known People," arranged by Mrs. J. Laird, was won by Mrs. R. Verry. Tea hostesses were Mesdames R. Verry and J. Laird. Competitions for the afternoon: Best bloom, Mrs. S. Wilson 1. Knitting: Mrs. Train 1, Mrs. Wilson 2, Mrs. Handley 3. At the conclusion of the W.D. meeting, the Famine Emergency Relief Appeal reported progress made during the month. A quantity of fat had been collected and left at the depot (Hurley’s Garage), this had been sent to Wanganui. Food coupons had also been handed in, also tinned foods and cash. Mrs. J. Laird acknowledged two anonymous donations', £5. and £4 10s, which had been sent to her for the appeal NGUTUVVERA WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. Mrs. Muldrock presided at the June meeting of the Ngutuwera branch of the Women’s Institute. There was a fair attendance. In the absence of the secretary, Mrs. McGlade read the minutes. Members spent the afternoon in sewing together peggy squares which are being made into a quilt. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Points prizes for the year were awarded to the following: Flowers, Mrs. Muldrock sen., 1: Sewing: Miss C. Muldrock and Miss J. Muldrock 2nd equal. Cooking* Miss C. Muldrock. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Forcyth, Nukumaru, are visiting Rotorua/ Mr. and Mrs. Loeber, Auckland, who have been spending several months with their daughter, Mrs. Leitch, have returned to their home. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Parkinson and family are going to make their home in Waitotara where Mr. Parkinson is going into business. He recently returned from overseas. Before enlisting he was for years on the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, Dunedin. Mrs. P. Leahy has returned from a visit to Wellington. Mrs. Muldrock, sen., Ngutuwera, has been visiting Masterton. NATIONAL FLAG 500. At a National Party flag 500 evening held in the Waitotara Hall recently, Mrs. C. Hodgetts, Misses O. and G. Verry, and Mr. R. G. Verry were the winning table. Miss Mary Laird won the "take-me” prize, and Mr. H. J. Wilson won a competition. The last of the series of evenings will be held on Tuesday, July 23, when the winner of the points prize will be found. NATIONAL PARTY. The Waitotara branch of the National Party held a special card evening in the local hall last Tuesday, when a number of Maxwell players were entertained. Waitotara avenged their defeat of the previous week, and an enjoyable evening was spent by some 50 players.
