The tournament was held for the purpose of determining the club team to represent the Wanganui district at the forthcoming provincial tournament which is to be held in Palmerston North on July 25. WESTMERE The opening game between Marton and Westmere was evenly contested throughout the first spell without either team having scored. After two minutes' play in the second spell

I the Marton team’s advantage In weight and the extra speed of its outside backs began to tell, and despite a stubborn defence the Marton backs swung into a successful attack ‘ for I. Stewart to outstrip the opposition and score in a handy position, i The .same player converted, to give i Marten a five-point lead. I With the resump; ion of play both teams mainlarned a fast pace, but ' Westmere’s efforts to break through the defence proved unsuccessful. Marton was on the attack until the last minute of play, and just on the -'all of time W. Fowler went over for Marton. I Stewart’s attempt at nversion failed and the game endel in a win for Marton by 8 points to nil. MARTON V. WAIMARINO After an interval of 15 minutes the second game was commenced, the Marton team being opposed this time ay Waimarino. Tne game was played at a fast pace throughout ana tno Marton learn, apparently benetilting irom having played an earlier game, quickly settled down to the attack, waimarino were s.ow starting, though I heir defence was sound. After about two minutes' play a smart passing rush by the Marton backs enabled 1. Stewart lo again open the scoring account by going over near the post. He added the extra points by converting his try. The spell ended with Marton still on the attack, but with no further change in the score. In the second spell the Waimarino team were quick on the attack and Marton was called upon to defend solidly. After bustling play the Waimarino team surged over their opponents’ goal line, but the ball was forced. From the drop-out Waimarino again went on the attack, and with five minutes gone in the second spell J. Drayton was rewarded for quick following up, with a try in a handy position. Waimarino’s chance of winning the game was lost when the attempt at conversion failed. Though holding the advantages throughout the last, two minutes of play, the Waimarino team was unable to break through a desperate defence and time was called with the Marton team narrowly winning by five points to three. WAIMARINO v. WESTMERE The third and concluding game of the tournament was piayed during the afternoon between Waimarino and Westmere. Despite a disadvantage in weight, the light Westmere team put up a strenuous defence and took every opportunity of carrying play to their opponents territory. During the first spell play fluctuated rapidly and it was not until after the first four -minutes of play that. C. Berry went over for j Waimarino for B. Gordon to add the extra points. The spell ended with Waimarino on the attack, but without further score. In the second spell the game continued at a fast pace with Westmere endeavouring to overcome their opponents' backs. However, Waimarino were a little more certain in their handling and footwork, and after a loose rush D. Alabaster went over near the posts and B. Gordon again converted. The game ended shortly afterwards with Waimarino winning b\’ 10 points to nil. ’Though they had failed to score, the lighter Westmere team played i with plenty of dash and determination, and the concluding game was i more evenly contested than the score * indicated. »
