OBITUARY

MRS. G. A. CRAWFORD, M.B.E. A record of distinguished patriotic work during two wars was held byMrs. Gertrude Alice Crawford, M.8.E., who died on Thursday in her 74th year. A woman possessed of unbounded vitality and energy, she did outstanding work organising patriotic efforts in World War I and was awarded the M.B.E. for her services. Born in Wakefield, Nelson, Mrs. Crawford was educated at the Nelson Girls' College, and then entered the teaching profession. She taught in the Nelson and Poverty Bay districts, was married in 1904 and returned to Nelson. In 1919 Mr. and Mrs. Crawford came to live in Wanganui, and soon after that. Mrs Crawford was one of the prime movers in the foundation of the Wanganui Croquet Club. Although she did not play croquet, she continued to take considerable interest in the affairs of the club. In the last war she served as secretary to the Women’s Club patriotic committee. Her husband, Mr. A I Crawford, a retired inspector of I schools, survives her. MR. THOMAS SCOLLAY. A well-known and highly respected resident of Pori Chalmers, Air. Thomas Scollay, died on Saturday. -V. a resident of Pori Chalmers, Mr. Scollay took an acl.ve Interest In everything relating io the progress or the puil. He was Mayor ut Purl Chalmers from 19'14 to VJIG. and was also a bui’uiigh councillor for some years. He was a member of the utago Harbour Board and was ■•nsii'mun in 1921. He contested the Chalmers seat as an Independent in 1931. Ho was also closely identified with rowing and yachting. He has two public i■ ion-" to his credit, “Grandpa the Sailor" rr.d “Romance of Davy Jones's Locke:'.” .Mr. Scollay is survived by Ids wife and me son.
