The Works Committee reported Ip t night, however, that it had since r '•eived a counter petition *rom a large number of residents at Wanganui East, protesting against rhe propos'd and asking the council to adhere In its previous decision not to permit salevards to be located there. A supporting petition was also received f rom the East Town branch of the A.S.R.S. The Mavor Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., said that it was only fair the council, before reaching a decision, should hear the deputation from residents. The deputation consisted of Messrs. D. 11. Honkirk and J. Lansdown, representing the residents, and L. R Kearse (A.S.R.S.). Mr. Hopkirk said residents in Wanganui East felt very strongly about this because farmers wanted to put salevards in the best residential area in Wanganui The petition was signed by 344 people in less than a week. 1 \part from the fact that ti'.e locality jv.as -deal for the building ol new ' ■.ellings in the future, I lie -..'line of • •osenl properties must decline if sale ird.s woto established in the locality. , The road menace must also be conide rod. There were no bitumen roads in that area and the dust I'li un •” in Hie summer months would be con-

There would also be a definite danger of children using the streets in this locality and this was the most important consideration of all, Mr. Hopkirk added. Residents in this locality would have to put up with much noise at night and there would be more hies during the summer months. “An other point,” said Mr. Hopkirk, “is that the milk treating house is established in that part of East Town. During the summer there would be clouds of dust blowing that way.” Messrs. Lansdown and Kearse supported Mr. Hookirk’s views, the latter commenting that, Iho Wanganui Eas* School was one of the largest in the city, more than GOO children being on the roll. Many of them, under the ago of eight years, used the street.s whore thn stockyards were proposed. Cr. G. P. Hawkins asked Cor the views of the deputation on the new railway crossing which would run from East Town to the saleyards. Mr. Hopkirk said that residents in this locality considered that the ’.ailwav crossing would he most undesirable and a definite menace to children. Cr. R. P. Andrews' The chief objection to the proposal is the danger to children? Mr. Hopkirk: That is so. In reply to Cr.
