MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB

<O.C.> Sanson, May 19. The weekly shoot of the Miniature Rifle Club, was held under handicap conditions, Messrs. R. Lumsden and H. E. Henson, with handicaps of 2 and 4 respectively thereby securing double possibles, proving the joint winners. Scores registered were as follows: R. Lumsden, 70-68-2-140; H. E. Henson, 67-69-4-140: A. Mr. H. J. Fagan suffered a nasty accident in endevouring to yard a beast, which charged the horse he was riding, knocking both horse and rider to the ground. Mr. Fagan was badly bruised, and is confined to his bed whilst receiving medical attention. Mr. S. A. Harris, whilst sawing wood with a circular saw on Saturday last, cut his right hand badly, necessitating several stitches. k Miss Catherine Collier, is spending the school vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Collier. Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Harris and family, together with Mrs. R Masters,

have taken a house at Foxton beach for the school holidays. Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Henderson are holidaying in Wellington. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

Mrs. C. E. J. Eglinton presided at the May meeting of the Sanson Women’s Institute. Before preceding with the business, Mrs. Eglinton mentioned that news had been received of the tragic loss by drowning of the brother of Miss E. Galbally. and members stood in silence as a mark of respect. Amongst other business the first section of remits received full discussion. It was resolved that during the winter months and extending to September, meetings will be held in the afternoons instead of evenings. The treasurer (Mrs. E. Grace) submitted a financial statement in connection with the recent dance, to raise funds for the delegates’ expenses to the anual conference in July, which was received. An excellent report compiled by Miss D. Pearce and read by Mrs. E. Davey delegates to the half-yearly council meeting) of the meeting ’ held in Feilding, invoked favourable comment. It was arranged that the first parcel of foods and other necessities be sent to the Dr. Barnardo Homes in England, the president offering to pack and forward as soon as possible. Each member was asked to bring a cake of soap to the next meeting. Mrs. Gregory, Voluntary Organiser, of Marton, addressed the’ meeting, taking for her topic “Some of the Great Women of the World.” Her talk was listened to with interest, and she was accorded a vote of appreciation for her address. Miss Innis, a representative of the British and Foreign Bible Mission, is to be invited to be the Speaker at the June meeting. Competition wiWfcers were as follows: Specimen bloom, Mrs. C. E. J. Eglinton 1. Mrs. G. W. Richardson 2. Mrs. B. Young 3. Aprons, Mrs. J. C. Fagan 1. Mrs. R. Jordan 2, Mrs. E. J. Davey 3'. The winner of a competition for % dozen tumblers, donated by Mrs. J. W. Beattie, was Mrs. O. C. Ellern. In the absence of Mrs. W. E. Pearce, visitors from Marton, kindly judged the competition. During afternon tea, Mrs. A. K. Drew handed round a piece of wedding cake on behalf of her foster daughter. Mrs. J. Lumsden, a former keen member just recently married. Hostesses for the June meeting will be Mesdames Davey and Coulter, while the competitions will be specimen bloom, and aprons for the individual effort.
