DIVERSION OF RAIL AND ROAD
(P.A.) We.niTgton, May 22. Developments in transport and communications out of Wellington to the north were mentioned by Mr. W. I J. Blyth, when the Wellington Harhc.u Board was discussing the Rongolai aerodrome report at its meeting to-night. Mr. Blyth said the railway line would be diverted to the west iide of Pcrirua harbour and would cross the enhance of that harbour to Plimmer’on. The tracks would be duplicated and the line electrified. The highway a'.cnu lhe old railway line from Johnjcnville to Taw a Flat and Porlrua would be put. through. He asked if. after all, they were ccnvinccd that Rongotai was the best
proposal. Paraparaumu would be brought within 40 minutes of Wellington. He could not see that there was any reason in spending £890.000 in displacing 246 people from their homes, when the Paraparaumu aerodrome was already established. (The ir tent ion is to destroy several houses and build a modern aerodrome at Rongotai). 'l he Government has been very active since this report was released. I think we can expect its policy decision in lhe matter in a few days. I don’t think Wellington will bo disappointed,' said Mr. Appleton, the Mayor of I Wellington, speaking as a member of , the Harbour Board.
