TAKING OVER OF CITY INDEBTEDNESS
ELECTORS’ REFERENDUM MAJORITY ANSWERS “YES” POLL The result of a referendum, taken by postal ballot bv the Wanganui Electors’ Association on the question of the city’s indebtedness, was announced last night by the returning officer, Mr. E. Christie. The referendum sought from electors an expression of opinion as to whether they were in favour cf the conversion of the city indebtedness to Bank of New Zealand debentures at 1 per cent, interest. The result was:— Those who answered “Yes”: 2304 Those who answered “No": 113 Some 6400 circulars were issued. Mr. Christie added that a sum of £l9 odd had been received by way of donations sent to Ihe association along with ballot papers. Details of these amounts had been entered in the association's books. "Naturally, we were disappointed that there was not a larger poll,” said Mr. R. O. C. Marks, president of the association, when asked to comment on the result, “hut it was up to the standard of recent city polls. From memory I lie noli on a proposal to raise a loan for the gas undertaking amounted to 20 rer cent, of the electors, and our poll was just on 20 per cent."
The figures will be duly forwarded Io the City Council and Mr. J. B. Cotterill, M.P for Wanganui.
