PLAN TO COLLECT FAT FROM PUBLIC

WANGANUI FOOD COMMITTEE Arrangements for the collection of all kinds of fat in Wanganui and suburbs were decided on by the local Famine Emergency Committee at a meeting yesterday. It was decided to arrange for the placing of collection drums at as many points as possible, and to give publicity to the drive. There were present at the meeting Mr. S. S. Timbs, who acted as chairman in the absence of Mr. W. J. Gilberd, Mrs. Melody, Rev. A. Brash, Messrs. J. C. Wickham, E. A. Millward, W. D. Young. B. Bowles, W. J. Tripe and S. Partridge, secretary. The chairman welcomed Mr. Tripe to the committee as the representative of Federated Farmers branches in tite district and congratulated Mr. Trice on the report he had made on the subject of saving fat for Britain and which he had submitted to the annual meeting of Federated Farmers In Wanganui. Mr. Tripe said he was keen to see tne suggestions he had made put into effect immediately. He pointed out that the great object to be achieved was frequent collection of fat so the more fresh consignments would be available. This would reduce the necessity for extra handling sorting and de-odourising. While the farmers were behind the national scheme in its broad outline, there were one or two features which differed from what the farmers had in mind, but such differences could be ironed out as opportunity offered. Mr. Tripe said he was pleased with the arrangements made for the collection of fat at premises in St. (1111 Street opposite the Opera House. Lorry and service car drivers could drive in deposit fat containers they had brought from the country and drive out again without trouble. Mr. Timbs suggested that the term "edible fats” should be dispensed with during the campaign. All fats could be taken as modern processing could make any fat marketable. Mr. Wickham pointed out that even ordinary household dripping, which would be discarded in the ordinary way, was "fat” for the purposes of the present collection, Mr. Partridge reported that he had attended a meeting of the Famine Emergency Committee in Auckland on Monday. There the committee had decided to try out a fat collection scheme in the city, using Army transport and Boy Scouts. Arrangements were also being made for the collection ot small lots of fats grocers. The Wanganui committee decided to contact all local organisations in order to form Avoidance of Waste. Use of Sutffititutes, Collection of Usable Commodities and Publicity Committes.

The Wanganui Grocers’ Association wrote advising lhe appointment of Messrs. W. J. Gilbert and C. Danielson as its representatives on the Substitutes Committee.
