GATUN LAKE MAY BE LOWERED Recd. 6 p.m. New York, April 22 Mr. Thomas Thompson, chief Panama Canal geologist, has begun recruiting geologists to make surveys preparatory to extensive alterations to the canal. The surveys will determine the practicability of a number of proposals aimed at making the canal less vulnerable in war-time. Mr. Thompson said tlje most promising proposal was to eliminate the locks and convert the canal into a sea-level waterway. This would involve history’s greatest excavating job, require the lowering of Gatun Lake, which at present is 85 feet above sea level.
