OBITUARY

MR. R. N. BLAKISTON. The death has occurred in Dannevirke of Mr. Reginald Norman Blakiston, senior partner in the legal firm of Blakiston, Blakiston and Nelson. Mr. Blakiston was in his 80th. year. He was always keenly interested in sport, and was a past officer of the Dannevirke Hunt and the Dannevirke Racing Club. He was a foundation member and former president of the Ruahine Club and the oldest surviving member and past master of Lodge Rawhiti. Mr. Blakiston is survived by his wife, two daughters, and one son. MR. W. G. SMITH. The death has ocurred of Mr. W. G. Smith, one of the party that guided Dr. Sutch and others across the Waiohine River when they were lost in the Tararuas several years ago. Mr. Smith, who was a farmer, resided at Matarawa. Mr. Smith became ill while on a deer-stalking trip in the Waiohine Valley and collapsed while being taken home. MRS. M. COOK. The death has occurred in Wellington, of Mrs.. Mary Cook, wife of the late Mr. J. W. Cook, Waipußurau. Sh& was aged 87. She was one of the oldest former residents of Hawke’s Bay. There is one daughter. MR. HENRY STONEX. Mr. Henry Stonex, a well-known breeder and exhibitor of Jersey cattle, died at New Plymouth last week at the age of 87. Mr. Stonex in his youth was a keen and capable cricketer and played for his county. Lancashire. He came to New Zealand in 1874 and took up farming in Taranaki. He retired from active farming about 1929 and moved to Russell, Bay of Islands, where he interested himself almost exclusively in deep-sea fishing. He purchased the launch Mao Mao, from which he fished successfully for many years. MR. V. C. MEEHAN. Mr. Victor Constantine Meehan died on Thursday night, after a brief illness, aged 55. He was managingdirector of James Meehan and Sons, Ltd., grain and produce merchants, and in addition had large pastoral interests. He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. DR. RALPH W. SOUTER, OF OTAGO UNIVERSITY. The death occurred recently of Dr. Ralph William Souter, who has held the Chair of Economics, at, the University of Otago for the last 10 years. Dr. Souter was born in Dunedin 49 years ago. He became an undergraduate of the university in 1914, but went overseas on military service before completing his course. He gained commissioned rank and returned to New Zealand at the end of the war. He resumed his university studies, and graduated BA in 1922, being senior scholar in economics. He completed his M.A. degree in the following year, with first class honours in mental and moral philosophy, and second class honours in economics.

Dr. Souter was appointed to the Chair of Economics at Otago University in 1935, and he took up his duties at the beginning of 19.36. Two years ago he prepared a plan for national economic planning after the war, and, shortly before his death, he was engaged on the economic plan designed 1 to aid New’ Zealand inavoiding inflationary tendencies. He is survived by a wife and two children. MR. THOMAS HOARE. The death occurred at Waimate cently of Mr, Thomas Hoare, as the result of an accident. Mr. Hoare had recently retired after 48 years’ service on the borough council of Waimate. He is survived by a family of five.
