SEVERE SENTENCES IN US- ARMY
Recd. 6 p.m. Washington, April 20. A House Military sub-committee, reporting on the Army courtmartial system, disclosed that 72 men were executed for murder, 51 for rape, 18 for murder and rape. One for desertion between December 7, 1941 and February 22, 1946. The committee sharply criticised the “partiality and extreme severity of the sentences “resulting from the system. The committee said there had been many excessive sentences, including two of life imprisonment for being absent without leave. It was recommended that the Army be given an autonomous judicial department.
