WINNER AT WASHDYKE

BRIDGE ACRE BACK TO FORM Last season Bridge Acre was class enough to win the Wellington Guineas at her first start for the season, and later finished third, beaten by a head and a neck, in the New Zealand Derby to Pensacola and Golden Souvenir. On Saturday she gave further evidence of her class when she won the open sprint at Washdyke, the Doncaster Handicap, in brilliant fashion. She was actually the last of the field to move off, but she caught the leaders just over a furlong from the post, and from then on the issue was never in doubt, states the “Christchurch Star.”

Whitley and Derene set a torrid pace for the first half-mile, Whitley being the first to drop out. Leign Barton, which was handy most of the journey, then moved up to Derene, but the pair had no chance with the winner.

Bridge Acre's success was actually her first over six furlongs and her first win since she won the Wellington Guineas. She beat Pensacola in the Pioneer Handicap at Riccarton as a two-year-old and in the autumn won the Challenge Stakes, Pensacola being in third place. She is not engaged in the principal events at Easter, but she will have good prospects in those races for which she has been nominated.
